Driver charged with taking photos, videos at Woodlands Checkpoint departure lane

SINGAPORE: A driver who allegedly posted photos and videos online of an immigration officer he was unhappy with at Woodlands Checkpoint was charged on Saturday (Aug 17).
Wong Jeo Wah, a 37-year-old Singaporean, was handed one count under the Infrastructure Protection Act of taking photos and videos without permission at a Woodlands Checkpoint departure lane counter on Aug 12.
It is an offence to do so within the checkpoint premises – a protected area – without consent from the authorities.
Photos and videos of the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer, along with his name, were uploaded to Facebook group Complaint Singapore a day after the incident.
In the post, which is no longer accessible, the purported driver made negative comments about the exchange, alleging the officer was rude.
ICA said in a Facebook post on Aug 15 that investigations indicated the driver had made “uncalled for remarks” when the officer instructed him to remove a sunshade from the right passenger window during immigration clearance.
The driver was referred to the duty office and given a stern warning after admitting to taking photos and videos on checkpoint premises, said ICA. He also agreed to delete them.
However, they were uploaded online and ICA referred the case to the police.
On Saturday, the prosecution said Wong might possibly face an additional charge under the Protection from Harassment Act, adding that his wife cannot be his bailor as she is a prosecution witness.
Wong, who was offered bail of S$10,000, said he would ask his wife to find another bailor. He will return to court next week.
If convicted, Wong can be jailed up to two years, fined up to S$20,000, or both.
